For those that just arrived, Welcome home! BJ and CindyFor those that have been here before welcome back. We are your hosts, BJ 'n Cindy. We own and operate this site as well as the sister sites.

As a retired Marine couple, we know just how new and puzzling, and sometimes how lonely or difficult it can be to find what you need. That is why we created this network and filled it with all kinds of resources to help you find whatever you may need... and to find one another.

So once again Welcome Home...

Approximately 27.9 million companies are operating in the United States, and 2.52 million are veterans. Suppose you want to become one of the many thriving veteran entrepreneurs. In that case, you need a good business idea, lay a firm foundation for your company, and take advantage of the resources available to you. Below, Military Wives Network shows you how to do just that!

Brainstorm Ideas

The first step of starting any company is coming up with a profitable idea. And to do that, you need to brainstorm as many possibilities as you can and make a list of a select few that seem the most promising and that line up with your interests, expertise, and abilities. Here are a few business ideas that have proven to work well for veterans:

  • Purchase a franchise.
  • Start a private security firm.
  • Start a tech consultancy firm.
  • Work in emergency services.
  • Become a workplace trainer for other veterans.
  • Open a gym or become a personal trainer.
  • Work as a government contractor.

Once you have narrowed your list down to a few ideas, you will need to conduct market research to determine what people in your community need the most. For your company to profit, there must be demand.

Write a Business Plan

The next step is to draft a thorough business plan that you will use as a roadmap for the first several years of your startup. A detailed business plan will include an executive summary, a description of your product or service, mission and values, marketing strategies, target audience, financial needs, financial projections, and more.

 Organize Your Finances

You may be able to bootstrap your startup, but if that is not an option, you will need to find other sources of funding so that you have the money necessary to start strong and grow in the early stages. Consider creating a crowdfunding campaign or asking friends and family members to help you launch.

Another option is to seek out angel investors, venture capitalists, and other investment opportunities. And, of course, you can always apply for the various small business grants and loans designed specifically for former and current military personnel.

Once you have some capital to work with, it is essential to manage it well. One way to make this easier is to invest in transaction API software that allows you to view, track, and categorize up to 24 months of transaction data. This type of tool also allows real-time transaction notifications so that you can stay on top of each transaction.

 Choose a Structure

There are several business structures to choose from when starting a business, and the one that best fits your needs will depend on your goals and the type of business you are creating. The easiest to set up and manage is a sole proprietorship. Still, many entrepreneurs go with an LLC because of the liability protection and pass-through taxation, among many other benefits.

If you are launching your company with a partner, you can also form a partnership. And if you need more extensive coverage and plan to scale fast, establishing a corporation may be worth your while.

 Stay On Track

Many moving parts are involved in starting and running a business, and you must stay organized if you hope to succeed. Invest in software that will help you organize your time and hold you accountable for deadlines and deliverables. For instance, use a monthly planner template for a birds-eye view of your task list, and customize the template with visuals and sticky notes.

You will also need to promote your new business heavily. Look into the plethora of digital marketing tools that can help you get your brand in front of your target audience and grow your customer base exponentially.

As a veteran, you likely possess more skills and desirable characteristics than the average entrepreneur. Take advantage by starting a business in a field you are passionate about. Along with following the tips above, keep looking for other ways to lay a solid foundation for your new company. Before long, you will be the founder of a flourishing small business!
